Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini on Friday (27 February) looked ahead to his team’s trip to Anfield to play Liverpool in the English Premier League on Sunday (1 March).
Pellegrini had stated the importance of the match for Manchester City he said it will be an opportunity to close the gap between City and league topper Chelsea who will miss out this weekend Premier League action due to League Cup final at Wembley Stadium, Chelsea will be facing Tottenham at the final.
“Yes, of course it’s important. More than psychologically, it’s important mathematically. We are going to have three points more. We are going, as you said, two points behind Chelsea because they will not play their next (league) game. We had the same exactly the same last season. I remember we were nine points behind Chelsea with three games in hand, but we were nine points behind them, and after that you must feel the pressure to win all those games. So it’s very important to beat Liverpool because they are a strong team. It’s a difficult stadium also. It’s important to try to continue winning in the Premier League the way we did the last two games. We won 4-1 and 5-0 against Stoke and Newcastle (respectively) and continue fighting for the title, to retain our title till the end, because I repeat, we have to play (for) 36 points more. That’s a lot of points and as soon as we close the gap it’s better for us.” ~Pellegrini
Liverpool beat Manchester City last season 3 -2 but Pellegrini believes City will go into the game with the same mentality Liverpool had then when his team was defeated.
“Well, it was a very special day also, because it was the day when they remember what happened with their fans (the Hillsborough disaster) some years ago. It was a very emotional day. I think it was a very close game also between both teams. We couldn’t win for different reasons, but this year we will go with exactly the same mentality to try to win and try to an aggressive team, an attacking team from the beginning.” ~ Pellegrini added
